Gardening.

Pollan's latest piece hit home for me. Stolen from Amrys.

Good article

If I didn't live in an apartment, I may try to grow a garden.

I know where this is going

But there's dirt. And weeds. And BUGS. I'm already the official bug killer inside. So that means you garden until there's a bug, and then it's my garden all of a sudden. ;)

...

So true.

no way

Bugs are pretty mindful about staying outside.

Our little deck garden is pretty happy with containers, though the poor plant seedlings are plaintively asking "why isn't it hot yet?" and SF weather is like "haahaa fooled you bitches! I'm going to freeze your little leaves off because it's summer!"

Yeah

I actually really don't mind bugs when they are outside. When they are inside, there are a finite number of places they can go, most of which will bother me. When they are outside, there are an infinite number of places they can go, most of which do not bother me. Heck, I was an outdoor school counselor back in HS and it didn't bother me to pick up bugs etc.

The only kind of outdoor bug that bothers me are spiders in webs. I hate walking into the webs and then wondering for the next 10 minutes whether there is a spider crawling all over me or not.

I've gotten a lot more zen about the bugs because my apartment doesn't really have doors or windows that shut fully...there's only so much we can do. Now the only bugs that really get me are the moths that eat my sweaters and my flour.
